Bromine vs Chlorine for Hot Tubs: What We Use and Why

Both bromine and chlorine can keep spa water safe when you test and maintain them. Hot tub water runs hotter and gets reused more than a pool, so the sanitizer has to hold up between soaks. Here is how we think about the choice on Michigan Treetop Media — without pretending one brand is magic.
Chlorine in a spa
Chlorine works and is familiar. In hot water it dissipates faster, and the “chlorine smell” people notice is often chloramines from combined chlorine, not free chlorine doing its job. Dichlor granules are common for spas. You still need an oxidizer / shock on a schedule to break down organics.
Bromine in a spa
Bromine stays more active in the typical spa temperature range for many owners and is often described as gentler on skin and smell when maintained correctly. Floaters with bromine tablets plus periodic non-chlorine shock (or a bromine-compatible oxidizer) is a common residential pattern. Bromine banks can be built with products labeled for that purpose — read labels carefully.
What we lean toward
On the channel we have used bromine systems with oxidizers like Spa Choice Re-Energize and HTH non-chlorine shock, plus test strips to stay in range. That does not mean chlorine is wrong. If your fill water, soak frequency, or preference points to dichlor, that can work too — consistency matters more than the team jersey.
Whichever you pick
- Test before you guess. Strips are imperfect but better than dosing blind.
- Keep pH roughly in the mid range your kit recommends so sanitizer can work.
- Shock after heavy use; do not only dump tablets and hope.
- Rinse filters so sanitizer is not fighting a dirty cartridge.
