Using an Inflatable Hot Tub in a Michigan Winter

Yes, you can run many inflatable spas through a Michigan winter — with caveats. The heater has to keep up, the cover has to seal, and you have to watch for freeze events if power fails. Plenty of owners soak happily in January; plenty of others winterize and store the tub. Both are valid.

What makes winter harder

  • Heat loss through the thin wall and floor is much higher than a foam-insulated hard shell.
  • Wind under the pines strips heat if the tub sits exposed.
  • Snow load on a soft cover can pool water and stress seams.
  • A power outage in single-digit weather can freeze the pump and plumbing fast.

Setup habits that help

Park the spa on a flat, insulated pad — rigid foam board under a protective layer is a common DIY approach (follow your model’s floor limits). Keep the cover on whenever you are not in the water. Sweep snow off so meltwater does not sit in the cover well. A well-fitted insulated cover topper or thermal blanket under the stock cover can cut heat loss; cheap tarps alone do little.

We have posted insulation and winter soak notes from real Michigan seasons on the channel, including longer-term follow-ups. Results vary by model, wind, and how often you open the cover.

Chemistry and filters in the cold

You may soak less, but organics still build when you do. Test weekly. Rinse filters more often if the heater runs near continuously — long run times push more water through dirty cartridges. Do not let sanitizer drop to zero “because nobody is using it”; biofilm does not take winters off.

When to shut it down instead

If overnight lows are extreme, your GFCI trips often, or you travel and cannot monitor power, draining and storing may be smarter than risking a cracked blower or frozen pump. Follow the maker’s winterize steps: drain fully, dry the bladder, and store indoors if you can.

Recall note: Some Saluspa AirJet / HydroJet pump recalls have affected certain units. Check the serial on your pump against current recall notices before winter storage or heavy use.
